Tips on how to get rid of indoor house gnats.

Is G’Bye G’Nats! Bug Repellent for indoor gnats too?

As the inventor/creator of G’Bye G’Nats! Bug Repellent, I get asked all the time if our product is for indoor use to get rid of those miserable little gnats that fly around the inside of your home that seem to come from nowhere.  Well, the answer is that our formula is made for people directly.  It helps protect you from harm and diseases that biting insects like mosquitoes, no-see-ums, gnats and flies can cause. Since I have been asked this so many times, I did some digging and I am going to give you some answers to hopefully help you get rid of your house gnats.

I know what everyone is talking about because I have encountered drain gnats at an airbnb we were staying at.  I used the method, (which I always share when asked), of 1 cup of warm water in a glass with a few drops of blue dawn detergent and a tablespoon of vinegar. (Some research says apple cider vinegar, but I think I used the regular).  I covered the glass with plastic wrap and poked some holes on top so the gnats could crawl in and placed the glass by the source, which in this case was their kitchen sink.

It took a long while for them to be attracted to it, so be patient.  Sure enough they got in but they didn't know how to get out and therefore died or were trapped for good.  So this method worked great for me.

But others tell me that they have tried this exact way and it didn’t work for them.  So, I am going to give you some other tips to try, because if you have ever experienced these annoying flying things in your home while eating or just watching TV, you will try just about anything to get rid of them.

How are they getting into my house?

These types of gnats love any kind of moisture and that is what they seek. Your drains, and your over watered indoor plants for starters.  Some people even like to bring their outdoor plants inside but, I feel that is what can bring in a big problem.  The outdoor bugs are already in the soil.  Try not to be tempted into doing this if you don’t want bugs in your house. Especially gnats.

Another culprit are the fruits we have on our kitchen counters.  Especially when they get over-ripen and cause these critters to magically appear. Fruits like peaches, melons, bananas, tomatoes and other produce like these can bring in gnats.  Before your fruits or vegtables get to this point, just refrigerate them. This will help.

Here are some other quick ideas that will help to rid your home of gnats?

-Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil in your potted plants to dry out between waterings.

-Place yellow sticky traps near your plants to catch flying adults. (Amazon or local stores).

-Fix your soil with 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 4 part water to the soil to kill larvae.

-Top dress your plant soil with a layer of sand, or small rocks to prevent adults from laying     eggs.

-Sprinkle cinnamon or diatomaceous earth on the soil.

-Keep your drains cleaned out. (Baking soda and vinegar followed by boiling water).

I hope these tips help you.  Because I know how pesky those tiny things can be.
